  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">BELIZE</span><span class="style42">Member of:</span><span class="style13"> UN, Commonwealth, CARICOM, OAS</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">22965 km2 (8867 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">204000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Belmopan 4000 (1992 est)</span><span class="style42">Other major city:</span><span class="style13"> Belize City 45000 (1992 est)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">English (majority; official), Creole (33%), Spanish (32%)</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Roman Catholic (62%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The eight members of the Senate are appointed by the Governor General, the representative of the British Queen as sovereign of Belize. The 28 members of the House of Representatives are elected by universal adult suffrage for five years. The Governor General appoints a Prime Minister who commands a majority in the House, and, on the PMΓÇÖs advice, a Cabinet, which is responsible to the House.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">Tropical jungle covers much of Belize. The south contains the Maya Mountains ΓÇô rising to 1122 m (3681 ft). The north is mainly swampy lowlands. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The subtropical climate is tempered by trade winds. Rainfall is heavy, but there is a dry season between February and May.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The production of sugar, bananas and citrus fruit for export dominates the economy. </span><span class="style42">Currency:</span><span class="style13"> Belize dollar.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Mayan settlements flourished in Belize until 600 years before the arrival of the Spanish. Although Spain claimed the area, there were no Europeans living in Belize until English pirates and loggers settled in the 17th century. Black slaves were imported to cut timber. In 1862 the area formally became the colony of British Honduras. The colony gained independence ΓÇô as Belize ΓÇô in 1981, but Guatemala continued to claim it as part of her territory until 1991.</span></text>
